Human Givens Therapy
Human Givens therapy is a psychotherapy that has been developed over the past 20 years by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell. They set up the Human Givens Institute and what is now the Human Givens College, offering training workshops and seminars to professionals (see www.hgi.org.uk ). Their ideas are gradually being taken into business and education where they are helping to establish greater well-being and focus amongst pupils, employers and employees. GPs are beginning to recognise the value of a therapy that can help effectively without recourse to drugs. Griffin and Tyrrell have also written a series of popular self-help books on Depression, Anxiety, Addictions, and Anger Management. Their book 'An Idea in Practice' was short listed for MIND's Book of the Year 2009.
The Human Givens Institute is a member of the Professional Standards Authority, the highest independent accreditation body in the UK.
What are the Human Givens?
The Human Givens are the needs and resources that we are all born with. These include our physical and emotional needs and all the resources that have evolved to help us get those needs met.
Our emotional needs include:
the need for security
the need for a sense of autonomy and control
the need for friendship and intimacy
the need to feel connected to others and to be part of a wider community
the need to feel competent
the need to give and receive attention
the need for privacy
the need for a sense of meaning and purpose
Our resources include:
imagination
curiosity
the ability to learn
memory
a brain that 'wants' to solve problems
our ability to 'stand back' and see things objectively and rationally
our ability to understand things through metaphor and stories
empathy
a rational as well as an emotional brain
resilience
empathy
our dreaming mechanism
The Need for Balance - Human Givens therapy
When our needs are met in balance and we are using our resources properly, we feel well. However when one or more of our needs are not being met and/or we are misusing our resources, we inevitably start to feel distress. This distress reveals itself in different ways, from depression to addictions such as drinking or eating disorders, to anxieties and phobias or just not feeling you are at your full potential.
A very common example of not using our resources properly is when we are caught up with worrying. We conjure up all the terrible things that might happen to us or other people close to us. This 'conjuring' is a misuse of the imagination - we are using our imagination to see only the negative, and as a result are making ourselves feel anxious and stressed. Conversely, learning to use our imagination in a healthier way leads to us feeling more positive and more likely to succeed. Most successful sportsmen and women now make use of this knowledge.
As a HG therapist, I have a wide range of 'tools' to help you identify which needs are not being met and what resources you are misusing. We can then work together to uncouple any unhelpful patterns that are blocking you, and to develop a healthier use of your resources so that you feel better in yourself.
One of the reasons I was attracted to this form of therapy is that, because it uses the best of many therapeutic approaches plus research of its own, it is really able to help people move forward quickly. I will listen to your story very carefully to understand what has happened and what it is you want to change and then set about helping you make these changes in a way that is uplifting and strengthening.
The Human Givens Institute has a very good website (www.hgi.org.uk) where you can find more information, buy self-help books and find a list of registered HG therapists.
